  • Farmers working on their paddy field in Kharupetia village of Mangaldoi district which is about 125 km from Guwahati, the capital city of India’s northeastern state of Assam, on Tuesday August 4, 2009. Though the monsoon has arrived late in the state but the farmers still get some relief with the rainfall. Kharupetia is known for its vegetable production. The Assam government has declared more than half of the state's 14 out of 27 districts as drought-hit due to scant monsoon rains. There has been nearly 30 percent rainfall from the beginning of June to 12 July 2009 in Assam and 14 districts received 414.8mm of rain in the period compare to an average rainfall of 588.8mm. Because of the lower rainfall this year, the farmers of Assam are lagging one month behind their actual agricultural scheduled time. Assam is primarily an agricultural state where more than 80 percent people are dependent on agriculture.
