  • In short - Take a clapped out Honda SH 50cc, arm its owner with a CANON and fire it with a roll of Black and White 35mm. SBS has been shooting since Sept 03, aided by his 21st century chariot to capture 360 of Julio Caesars backyard. The Story - The B & W images are direct and realistic and represent 1 million ROMAN'S daily routine through the city, on and off two wheels. The photographs are varied throughout but take us via a journey of peoples thoughts and moods during a particular second in time. The images are a calm and collective view of the city's architecture through the duration of the day but they also take a look at the city with a more chaotic vision, as seen by the people living inside it. The joy from shooting via 2 wheels, despite the obvious dangers, ( if you are unaware of these threats to your life, spend a day walking around the city and you will fully understand!) is a personal curiosity in sharing other peoples moving space, which is forever changing, second to minute, hours to days. With a 360 degree view, the scooter is the ultimate accessory in motion, assisting you in recording events passing around you. In a way its like having your own personal film assistant, positioning you in the right place at the right time, enabling you to snap the final frames, as seen in my images. The project was born after two sources: 1) After finding a book in a discount book store, called 'Drive by Shooting' in which NYC taxi driver and photographer David Bradford captures life in New York from behind the wheel of an iconic yellow cab, using his windshield as his second lense. The result; a black and white diary of 15 million people living the urban reality. Rome by Scooter does one better as you are able to shoot a 360 degree from the Romans transport of choice, the scooter aka modern day chariot! 2) After taking the plunge and deciding to move to Rome I came across an article in the Independent (on the flight over) by Peter Popham in which he describes his journalistic days living in Rome and the experience of traveling around by scooter, risking every part of his life with the thousands of 'motorinis'. I then decided what a great idea it would be to capture this in film and this is how 'Rome by Scooter' was born!
