Thousands of people gathered on Amsterdam's Dam Square to commemorate the victims of wartime violence on the National Remembrance Day. HM. King Willem-Alexander and HM.Queen Máxima placed the first wreath at the foot of the National Monument.

Today Dutch Queen Beatrix abdicated the throne, and her son Willem-Alexander took over the throne as the new King. The crowd on the Dam could follow the ceremonies on large screens and later greet the Royal Family as they appeared on the balcony.

"The King is ready, the Dutch are ready, Amsterdam is ready" said Mayor van der Laan during a press conference as the country prepares for the investiture of Willem-Alexander, who will take over as king of the Netherlands.

Amsterdam is preparing and warming up for royal celebrations on Queens Day 2013. Large buildings in the city centre are decorated with royal banners, and people are working to get everything ready for this special annual event.
